| The businesses are both located at 111 N. Main Street which is classified by the Department of Economic Development as a “distressed” region of Kirksville and therefore eligible for tax credits. “It was fortuitous that we were aware these companies were getting ready to start up; when we learned that they could qualify for greater credits if they applied before beginning their business operations we were able to advise them to make application to the state immediately”, said Boyes. Both businesses were notified that they will qualify for tax credits beginning with this tax year. Tate explained that, “The state makes the tax credits available to assist new businesses in getting started by reducing their tax burden.” Each of the businesses qualifies to receive the tax credits for the first 3 years of their operation.
